NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND FOR THE DAY

A Favourite place for us to visit
We will tour a few mansions
Have lunch by the ocean
Then
Come home to our pets who
will be waiting for us

Welcome to
THE ELMS

This villa was the summer retreat of coal magnate
Edward Julius Berwind and his wife Herminie

We decided to take the
'behind the scene' tour

There was a circular driveway where
all supplies would have been dropped off
All services to the house were in this area......
Kitchen, pantry, laundry

Unfortunalely we were not allowed to take
pictures inside the home
This was a disappointment
for the camera lady

(view from top of house)

We had a tour of the first floor which housed
the kitchen area
then
 were taken to the basement
where we saw the 'heating' system
Since Mr. Berwind was in the coal business
he had coal shipped to Newport from Virginia
There was an underground tunnel system where
coal was loaded on to coal cars from the road
and transported on tracks to the basement coal bins

From the basement we climbed 100 steps to the 3rd. floor
where the maids, servants and the butler lived
We went out onto the roof and took in the view of
the front lawn and in the distance you can
see the Newport marina

There must have been at least 15 bedrooms
The women had their own room
the men shared a room
Although there was one big window in each room the
maids and servants did
not have a view as there was a
facade around the top of the home

You can see the facade

This era was in to statues

LUNCH TIME

We drove along the coast and stopped at this
little beach area for lunch

We all noticed this shoe on the beach
We looked at each other and
wondered
What is the story as to why the shoe was there????
We thought it was a bit creepy

Also
A golf ball
What's the story here?????

Whatever works for a couple

The fellow is going fishing
and
the lady
is
catching a few winks
and
enjoying the warmth of the sun

Over the tree tops we spotted kites

What a sight
dipping and diving in the wind

The handler of the kite had an extra waist harness
with a third line attached

Out for an afternoon at the park

What caught my eye about this couple
was that they were facing
each other as they enjoyed their
time in the park

We are now on to our second tour

Chateau-Sur-Mer

The home to three generations of the Wetmore family

At the back of the home is a croquet lawn
The local Newport club plays croquet
at the lawn each week

Across from the 'lawn'
was a group of Japanese cedar trees

On two other occasions when in Newport
I have taken photos of
St. Mary's Church
where
Jack Kennedy
married
Jacqueline Bouvier

Today I was thrilled as
the doors to the church were open

Beautiful stained glass window behind the alter

The floor is made of tile

The first pew on the groom's side

(I noticed the plaque cards at the end of the pews)

Miss La Farge
10 o'clock
4 sittings
Does this go back to when the church was built
 in the 1800's?

The pipe organ must be magnificent

There were four chairs on each
side at the back of the church
Not sure who would sit there??

This is where the bride would have stood
before walking down the isle

American flag blowing in the breeze
as we left Newport

A great day was had by all

  4. Thank you again for a magnificent trip ! I enjoy these pictures and scenes very much. Imagine that first castle was a summer retreat ! That woman was knocked off balance and lost her shoe when hit by the 60 year old golf ball, tossed by the couple facing each other. The cause was an exuberant throw by the gent that the misses missed.
