THE PICKER'S SHACK

A few years ago our daugher moved
from Squamish BC to Penticton
She was going to live in  a picker's shack
The shack had been on a former apple orchard
This is where the 'workers' lived
while picking apples on the orchard

Soon the orchard would
be turned into
a vineyard

The shack was the size of a single car garage

A lot to be desired
and
a lot to be left to the imagination

A shower and toilet but no bathroom sink

********

This is the home she was leaving

Her books and photographs

Her little work room

Little backyard
which she loved

Her collection of pugs!

********

ONWARD SHE WENT

Insulation went into the attic

Her Dad was there to give a hand

She even found an old bathtub
She would get into her bathing suit
after work and have a soak!!!!
(in the summer time!)

Here we come for a visit

Welcome to the shack

Her favourite books

Her sofa/bed

Her photographs have a new home

The bathroom

The kitchen area

Her little computer area

Every space was put to good use

A lovely little cozy home
She stayed for a year
Whistler was calling her back
She told me
She missed the green of BC

**********

Over the past few years
the shack has
deteriorated a bit
A project
for the carpenter

Renovations may be
in the works
this fall!

  1. How resourceful you and your family are. Your daughter did an outstanding job with the "picker's shack." You and Joe must be so proud of her ambition and willingness to create such a darling home. Love all your stories and photos, Dianne. Keep up the great work. I check here almost daily!

  3. I agree with Marge's sentiments, you are all so amazing ! This article should appear in a magazine like Harrowsmith. People are too quick to bulldoze and scrap. That pickers' shack has so much history and character. Absolutely amazing !!!!!!
